About

Jamie Nelson

Photographer/Director, Jamie Nelson, shoots regularly for Vogues in 8 different countries and Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Vanity Fairs all over the world. Jamie's aesthetic expands to a vast global market.

Originally from Texas and Colorado, Nelson caught the photography bug in High School soon after learning she could not draw if her life depended on it! She followed her newfound talent to Brooks Institute, where she treated every classroom assignment like a professional editorial (eventually one was published before she left school). She was off to New York immediately after graduation.

“Ironically, I had to sell my camera to get there, so I was a photographer without a camera for a while,” she says.

“There was no stopping me after I saw that first editorial come out.  The feeling of having the world see and be inspired by your vision is like nothing else.”

Nelson’s enthusiasm and versatility with film, digital, and multiple formats makes her an appealing choice for beauty clients like Dior, Shiseido, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, MORPHE, Huda Beauty, Benefit Cosmetics, Urban Decay, Lime Crime, ColourPop, Make Up For Ever, Olay, Almay, Tarte Cosmetics, Maybelline, Smith & Cult, and Kiss Cosmetics, as well as editorial clients like Playboy, Vogue Portugal, Paper Magazine, NYLON, Elle, and Cosmopolitan.

Nelson has always been drawn to photography and direction for its sense of “experimentation and magic,” and while she’s well-versed with a 4x5 camera, she also relishes the instant feedback and limitless shooting a digital-back provides. Nelson is also a firm believer that there’s always room for the throwback analog – she keeps disposable cameras in her fridge for years to shoot personal projects, thinking of them as tiny time capsules.

Between flights to Texas, the Dominican Republic, Colorado, NYC, India, St. Lucia, The Maldives, London, Dubai, and Paris, Nelson spends a lot of time on the road, but relishes her time on the beach with her mom, or hanging in the middle-of-nowhere-Texas with relatives on her father’s side. “I think it keeps me sane,” she says.

Perhaps one of the most alluring and instantly-recognizable aspects of Nelson’s work and aesthetic is her iconic pink, mid-century, Old-Hollywood house and matching pink Mustang convertible, both of which are nestled in the heart of Northridge, CA. Equipped with pink shag-lined walls, retro furniture, and a swimming pool large enough to hold all of her frequent party guests, Nelson’s oasis is regularly utilized as a shooting location for celebrities, commercial clients, and editorials alike.

When not shooting and managing her house, Nelson’s love of cats, basketball, Bad Brains, accordion, running, playing the piano, vintage shopping, and rollerblading keeps her plenty busy too.
