Gavin O’Neill gets around. Born in New Zealand, the beauty and swimsuit photographer lives in New York and works all around the world, including the U.S., South Africa, Australia and Asia.
Before O’Neill fell in love with photography, he was in love with music. His teenage band was a great success, and even went on a nationwide tour. It was on this trip that he starting taking pictures of what he saw without too many pre-conceived notions, which is the way O’Neill still likes to work today-- it keeps him from getting bored. When O’Neill’s band later broke up, he swapped his drums for cameras.
O’Neill’s style is about approaching a simple subject and making it interesting and beautiful. He has worked for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Sports Illustrated ,L'Oreal, Olay, Avon, Philips, Coca Cola, Omnitel, and Gillette.
He recalls his first day on set for Vogue, a watershed opportunity in any beauty photographer’s career, as his most exciting career moment. Since then, O’Neill has built a reputation for working hard and feels that he’s almost where he wants to be with his career, which is very exciting.
O’Neill’s love for music has endured over the years—he can’t live or function without it, and loves making playlists for work and travel. Travel is something O’Neill takes very seriously as well—he jokes that he’s “happiest at about 30,000 feet.”
